“The fast pace, surprise twists, and international intrigue of La Concha make this newest offering from D.P. McHenry vie with any thriller. Indeed, “Romance” is too narrow a category for it – this is a book men will also love, with strong male protagonists – both good and evil – a setting on and around boats, and a heroine – Laine Devlin – with enough grit to try to outrun her Russian businessman-thug husband, who wants her dead. A cozy Connecticut marina, where the book opens, contrasts perfectly with the torrid Mexican beach on which it closes. McHenry writes with authority and skill about sailboats (and their engines!) lending great credibility to the proceedings. Her typically lovely use of language and sensuous description is fully employed: when Laine first meets Jake, who has come aboard her sailboat to try and fix its engine, we learn: “The galley was tight and she was standing so close to him she could smell his sweat.” This is an unexpected and highly erotic line, and the physical expression of their desire which follows will have you reaching for a fan. But just as in all her novels, her characters are fleshed out real people, trying to build a true relationship amidst a frantic and most exciting race against Laine’s estranged husband’s operatives, and the man himself. Little escapes the author’s notice or is beneath her mention. Bit players with but a line or two are vividly described so that we hear the cadence of their speech. This cross-over Thriller/Romance will absorb and thrill you. Just be prepared to share it with your husband or boyfriend!”
