Not a blue as in sad note, but as in Blue Note Records, the label of John Coltrane, Chick Corea, Art Blakey, Ron Carter, Marcus Miller, Norah Jones, Mose Allison, and Trombone Shorty to name but a few. Entertainment Cruise Productions is the company that coordinates three jazz cruises; a smooth jazz, straight ahead jazz and the Blue Note at Sea Jazz cruise. This was our second year on the Blue Note cruise, and we’ve signed up for next year already. Yes, it was that good.
Jazz Festivals are great. We’ve done the Newport Jazz Festival on a boat, on land, in blistering sun and pouring rain and certainly enjoyed all of them. We catch jazz shows when they’re in the area and whenever we find ourselves in New York. But having a solid week of amazing music, accessibility to the artists, great seats in no matter what venue on the ship, and Caribbean weather and surroundings, not to mention the staff of Celebrity Cruises, makes for a perfect combo. And seeing these amazing artists working with each other as well as attending each other’s shows allowed a peek into how close this community is. This years artists included Marcus Miller, Gregory Porter, Christian McBride, Niki Haris, Gerald Clayton, David Sanborn, Robert Glasper, Cory Henry (of Snarky Puppy fame), Emmet Cohen, Joey DeFrancesco, Kamasi Washington and comedian Alonzo Bodden.
If you’re a jazz lover, an aficionado, just a casual listener or know nothing about jazz at all you’ll still appreciate these photos, most taken by Entertainment Cruise Production photographers. You’ll get the vibe.

If you’re a jazz lover and haven’t seen Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool on PBS’ American Masters, give it a look. It’s one of the best I’ve seen.
Looks like a lot of fun!
Looks fabulous! Where was the cruise to, and from? Or a big loop in the water…from point A to point A..?
Started in Miami, then spent 2 days at sea before stops at St. Thomas (where we snorkeled), Dominican Republic, and Labadee, Haiti. Then back to Miami. I actually preferred the days at sea because we got to listen to music all day!

Deborah, Thanks for sharing your Blue Note experience. John and I are also fond of Jazz and The Blues. Live music in general is always “a go to” for us. We have been to Memphis a few times and love just strolling around to the “Live” stages and clubs on the street. I like several music styles but just not a fan of “Rap” at all….. At my age, that is just not sweet to me. John and I will be in Atlantic City, NJ on March 21 to see Michael Buble in concert. It’s a month late Birthday present for me. He is the new Sinatra with a kick and most anyone who sings with orchestra back up is my kind of show. I am familiar with Nora Jones and like her. Many on your list I don’t know well but I am sure I would love them. So nice to hear from both of you. Your trip was a real hit, I can see.
Enjoy Michael Buble! You’re right, I love a singer with a big band, too!

Hi Deb,
Your cruise sounds great!! Dave and I took a Soul Train cruse because our buddies Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr. were on it. Like you, we love the all week opportunity to hear great music!
I don’t know if you and Steve are familiar with the Berks Jazzfest that is mostly based in Reading, PA. It’s a wonderful chance to see and hear some of our favorite musicians. Rick Braun is from Allentown so we usually find a show he’s in. Here’s this year’s lineup:
The Berks Jazz fest 2020 is back and better than ever! The 30th annual edition will take place March 27th-April 5th, 2020. The spotlight will be on Reading, PA where there will be several concerts by some of the biggest names in the music biz.
This is not a festival in the traditional sense, where you go to one venue and all of the artists perform on one or two stages. These are actually individual concerts and you can choose the artists that you want to see.
The concerts will take place throughout Berks County at various venues, including small churches and clubs, the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Reading, the Santander Performing Arts Center, the Miller Center for the Arts and the Scottish Rite Cathedral. There will be something for everyone, as you will be able to listen to contemporary jazz, traditional jazz, pop, crossover, blues, funk, R&B, gospel and some uniquely creative collaborations.

Unfortunately we’ll just be returning from Mexico when the Jazz Fest is happening, so not this year but thanks for the heads-up! If you get a chance to go don’t miss Marcus Miller!
